Antimicrobial activity of Southwestern Atlantic shallow-water marine sponges (Porifera)

Antibacterial and antifungal activities were widespread in crude extracts of 21 species of shallow-water tropical sponges from the Southwestern Atlantic, screened by the diffusion plate method. However, antibacterial activity was more common and 95 % of the species screened showed antimicrobial activity. Nine species (Monanchora arbuscula, Tedania ignis, Tedania sp., cf. Arenosclera sp., Amphimedon viridis, Polymastia janeirensis, Aplysina fiilva, Pseudaxinella lunaecharta, and Mycale arenosa) showed strong antimicrobial activity and are thus recommended for chemical and pharmacological studies. We found no significant relationship between antimicrobial activity and sponge habitat or growth form. The production of mucus appeared to indicate the presence of antibacterial substances.
