LARVAL AND POSTLARVAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE SHRIMP Pleoticus muelleri BATE, 1888 (CRUSTACEA, DECAPODA, , SOLENOCERIDAE)T.-h e larval and postlarval development of the shrimp P. muelleri is studied using larvae reared in laboratory and obtained from plankton samples. The developmental series consists of 6 nauplius, 3 protozoea, and 2 mysis substage. At 20 "C the embryonic development is completed in about 24 hours; the nauplius stage lasted 3-4 days and the protozoea and mysis stages 3-4 and 5-7 days respectively; the postlarval stage is reached in 19-23 days. The most outstanding morphological characters, which are shared with the other Solenoceridae larvae so far known, are: the presence of many spines on the carapace and abdomen, only 2 mysis substages, an evident intermoult growth, and the first postlarvae with a complete rostral formula. Larvae reared in the laboratory are compared to those collected from the sea; they differ in the length of spines. All littoral penaeid larvae from Argentine waters are compared; the protozoeae, mysis and postlarval stages can be specifically determined considering only the number of spines on the carapace and pleon, while the nauplius of all species are quite alike, and only the last substage can be ascertained.

Keywords: Crustacea, Decapoda, Solenoceridae, Pleoticus muelleri, larval and postlarval development.
