FLUCTUATIONS OF THE PARTIAL FECUNDITY IN THE SPANISH SARDINE (Sardinops sagax) DURING THE MAIN SPAWNING SEASON IN 1990, IN THE NORTHERN REGION OF CHILE. - Monthly fluctuations of the partial fecundity in the Spanish sardine (Sardinops sagax) are established within the maximum spawning year of 1990 (July to November). 259 ovaries were analyzed of a total of 5906 females collected on board fishing vessels and in port between 12 July and 23 November of 1990. The results show that at the beginning of the reproductive peak, fecundity was low, then increased and reached its maximum during August, and fell again at the end of the reproductive period. Nevertheless, the relationship between the ovary and oocyte weight with the average diameter of the more advanced mode (ODAM) does not show significant differences in the months considered. The histological analysis allowed the identification of ovaries with distinct degrees of yolk deposition and maturity, this study considers those ovaries with fully yolked oocytes (VT) and those close to hydration (VTHI). Based on these two aspects, the females were grouped and their ODAM and average oocyte weight were determined. No significant differences between these parameters were found during the months analyzed, except in September in the VTHI stage where an increase is observed. It is concluded that variations in the partial fecundity of the Spanish sardine do not necessarily imply fluctuations in egg size. |
