Hidrocarburos aromáticos policíclicos en peces de aguas costeras canarias

POLYCYCLAICRO MATIC HYDROCARBONS IN FISH OF COASTAL WATERS FROM CANARY ISLANDS.- Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations have been determined in 54 individuals of three fish species: Boops hoops, Scomber japonicus and Sardina pilchardus, collected in coastal waters from Santa Cruz de Tenerife. After measured and weighed, the samples were saponified and quantitatively extracted with hexane. The extract was fractionated into aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons by silica/alumina column chromatography. PAH were eluted in a second fraction with hexane/dichloromethane (4:1) and determined by spectrofluorimetry and gas chromatography. The spectrofluorimetrically measured PAH concentration were 1 mg.g-l (chrysene equivalents), being one order of magnitude lower than the aliphatic hydrocarbons (C12-C30), determined by gas chromatography. A seasonal variation of concentrations was observed, which could be related with the muscle fat content and spawning stage of fishes. Differences of accumulation of individual PAH among the studied species were observed, which could be related with their food habits.
