A prototype expert system involved in classificatory tasks for sponge identification
Marta Domingo
A first evaluation is made of the advantages of using artificial intelligence techniques in producing automatic tools for biological classification and identification. The general principles of knowledge-based expert systems are set forth and their application tested in the domain of the Porifera by means of SPONGIA, a rule-based expert system devised to aid in the classification of North Atlanto-Mediterranean sponges. Special attention is given to problems involved in constructing the knowledge base.
