E. Rodríguez-Moscoso, J.P. Pazo, A. García and F. Fernández-Cortés

Thereproductive cycle of Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum (Adams &Reeve 1850) was studied during fifteen months. That species was imported to theGalician Rias (NW Spain) from the Pacific coast in the late years.Stereological techniques (quantitative method) and histological staging(qualitative method) were used to record gametogenic activity. It was foundthat R. philippinarum (both males and females) were ripe all year aroundunless a rest period from October till December. A decrease in the percentageof ripe oocytes, corresponding to the spawning period in females from June toNovember was observed, with a fecundity of 36.8% and spawning efficiency of94.3% . In males, the evolution of gamete volume fraction (GVF), experimentedtwo decrease around the year, one from August to November (fecundity = 34.3%and spawning efficiency = 84.5%) and another in January (fecundity = 15% andspawning efficiency = 49.4%). During the April-August period GVF reaches highervalues with small fluctuations, that can be explained as partial gameteemissions.
