Fluctuations in abundance of small and mid-size pelagics
J. Csirke

A brief review is made of the state of exploitation and changes in abundance of the main small and midsize pelagic fish stocks of the world. A comparative description is made of the main population characteristics of these two fish groups, and their exposure to fishing and changing environmental conditions. Causes and types of resource abundance variability are discussed, with particular reference to the short term year-to-year changes and the longer term decadal regime changes observed.

Keywords: Exploitation, changes in abundance, small and mid-size pelagic fish, fishing and environmental conditions.
