This volume presents an overiew of the planktonic microalgae from the Mediterranean Sea in high quality scanning electron microscopy images, complemented with drawings. The emphasis was done to show the structural complexity of the cell cover of such small organisms and their diversity (251 taxa are present). Through the up to date terminology, the description of the organisms at the genus level, the taxonomical index and citations to the current literature encourage entry into the marine phytoplankton.
