Histological observations on the reproductive cycle of the Argentinian sandperch, Pseudopercis semifasciata (Osteichthyes, Pinguipedidae)
J.G. Macchi, I. Elías and G.E. Burgos

Samples of Pseudopercis semifasciata were obtained from commercial landings in Puerto Madryn (Argentina) from September 1982 to January 1983. A maturity scale, based on histological preparations of 223 ovaries, is proposed. The Argentinian sandperch is a multiple spawner distinguished by a low batch fecundity and a high turnover rate of hydrated oocytes. Spawning activity was observed from October to January with a peak in November and December. Possible reproductive strategies to overcome the low batch fecundity are suggested.

Keywords: Pinguipedidae, Pseudopercis semifasciata, reproduction, multiple spawning.
