Close-up photography of marine life on board research vessels
Armin Svoboda

Methods for photographic documentation of total catch and selected marine specimens on board research vessels are described. The use of immersed lenses, macrolenses and microlenses are evaluated, examples are given of several lighting arrangements, together with remarks on suitable backgrounds. A newly designed lighting system is introduced for macrophotography, using electronic ring-flash with dedicated TTL exposure control. Special attention is paid to the photography of cold-water fauna, and to the making of special equipment that is not available commercially.
