Age, growth and population structure of Solea senegalensis Kaup, 1858 (Pisces, Soleidae) in the Ria Formosa (Algarve, Portugal)
José Pedro Andrade

This paper isbased on studies of the length frequency distributions of 4374 individuals ofthe sole, Solea senegalensis, caught at monthly intervals in the RiaFormosa lagoon on the south coast of Portugal. Analysis of the monthly lengthfrequency distributions suggested three cohorts in age group 0. These cohortsare the result of different waves of migration of the juveniles, from the seato the lagoon. Growth in length in age group 0 ranged from 43% to 50%, betweenJune and December, respectively. The lowest growth rates were obtained betweenJanuary and May. The Gompertz growth function yielded a good fit to thelength-at-age and weight-at-age data, indicating high growth rates of thejuveniles.
