Age and growth of the european eel, Anguilla anguilla (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Aveiro Lagoon, Portugal
Leonel Serrano Gordo, Isabel María Jorge

A total of 1170 eels were captured from December 1985 to December 1987 and from December 1989 to May 1990 with the total lengths varying from 5 to 59 cm. In order to study eel growth and based on 1079 otoliths, an age-length key (0-9 age groups) was established. The otolith interpretation was validated by length frequency analysis. Based on the age-length key, the Von Bertalanffy growth parameters were estimated:

Lt = 110.88 [l - e-0.0727 (t+1.256)]

Analysing the age composition it followed that we were dealing with a population essencially constituted by young individuals where 94% of them were 3 years or less.
